Reading on Nutrition Project
On April 13, 2017, we had the privilege of collaborating with our Canutillo ISD and the Canutillo Elementary School (CES). To help support or mission of impacting our youth through education and make an impact on nutrition, we reached out to Canutillo Elementary School’s Parent Liaison, Laura Lopez. We spoke to her about the month’s theme for the school which was on nutrition. Therefore, we decided to partner with them and have a “Reading on Nutrition” project.
One of our focus is in the health and wellness area, with this, having an impact on nutrition is one important key area. To accomplish our goal, we were able to go into various classrooms.
Reading in Classrooms
In order for us to furnish children with free books, we contacted Books are Gems. They graciously offered to donate over 700 books geared towards elementary students and many towards nutrition. Volunteers, already assisting Ms. Lopez, and our Youth Impact leaders went into the different Pre-K to 2nd Grade classrooms to read the different books on nutrition.
Being that it was close to Easter, every child was able to get a book along with a little gift bag. Reading was done in both English and Spanish.
Here, the children are engaged by what Lucy is reading to them.
Below is a collage and additional images that were taken from this fun and interesting day:
Being able to go into the Canutillo Elementary classrooms and read about nutrition has allowed us to reinforce why eating healthy is important for them in the future. We couldn’t have done this without the collaboration from Books are Gems and the wonderful leaders and volunteers that offered their time to read to our youth.
Thank you to everyone that helped make this possible!
